Some stories that have been relayed
recently:
I
use to love hearing stories of how my parents met and
their dates when I was younger. One of my parents
favorite stories is how when my mom was attending UNCG
1976-80 Dad would drive up to visit her every Friday and
take her to Bills Pizza Pub. It was their Friday night
tradition. I moved to Greensboro and started at UNCG in
2002. My parents took me to Bills after they moved me
into the dorm. Its now a favorite of mine! Its Friday
night - 8pm, my boyfriend and I are getting ready to
drive to Bills for dinner.... gotta carry on the family
tradition. :)
Over
the years, Bill’s has been the destination for many who
have come to share a meal
together. Many a romance began and flourished there. One
couple fondly recalls their first date, which included
dinner at the old Bill’s on Battleground Avenue. Owner,
Donna, recalls it was she who
trained
husband, John, how to make
doughs when he first started working there.
While doing this one
day, he asked her
for a date. They will soon celebrate their 35th wedding
anniversary.
Donna’s
fondest memories were during those early years. Her very
first job there was as switchboard operator. Customers
placed their orders via telephones at the table. This
system also provided a unique way of communicating table
to table by customers. If you saw someone you knew (or
would like to know) at another table, you asked the
operator to connect you. What a fun first job that was!
My
brother, who now lives in another city, shipped me two
pairs of tennis shoes from his company. When I asked how
much I owed him, he replied not to worry about it – just
get him a couple of those Pizza Pub Specials!
A
woman remembers when she was a teen and grounded by her
mother, being released from punishment long enough to go
and pick up her order at Bill’s.
I
used to live in Greensboro and in high school went to
your Battleground location with my friends. When that
closed I would make a special trip to High Point Road to
buy 5 of your lunch specials and freeze them. I now
live in Reidsville. When I was on bed rest with my
first child nine years ago, it was also my 30th
birthday. My husband surprised me that night by going
to get take out of Bill's pizza for dinner. That was one
of my favorite birthdays!! Now your Oak Ridge location
is wonderful for me because I drive through Oak ridge 3
days a week! Me, my husband and our 3 kids are all BIG
Bill's Pizza fans!
In
1981, I was a student at UNCG. Some guy, a bodybuilder,
asked for a date. He took me to your restaurant for
pizza; I remembered it was cut into squares. While he
chatted on about weights, running, and the Olympics, I
munched on the best pizza I have ever had. Since that
date 26 years ago, I have been talking about that pizza.
I moved back to Greensboro in 2003. No one here had a
clue about the location of the restaurant. That is until
last week!
My
supervisor, a 25 year old young lady, LOVES pizza. She
raved about one place she found. "Miss Toni, that pizza
is everything!" When she brought in the leftovers, I
realized instantly that she was talking about MY
restaurant!! This is a dream come true. I'll be
seeing you soon. . .
I
had the pleasure of enjoying Bill's Pizza when it was
located on High point Rd. I attended Ben L. Smith high
school back in the 70's at the same time as Donna.
Bill's was one of the best places around to eat pizza if
not the ONLY place. As i grew older and things changed
in my life I still returned there to enjoy the pizza
even after my family grew. I was really excited when I
learned Bill's was coming to Oak Ridge. People will
really enjoy the food and the wonderful people that own
Bill's. They are great.
Bill's
Pizza on High Point Road was a major part of my high
school experience. I, too, went to Smith High School.
We'd eat at Bill's after football games, etc. My youth
group would eat there on Sunday nights. My family and I
have continued to enjoy your pizza, but driving over to
HPR from Summerfield made our visits fewer than we'd
like. Now that you are in OR, we can be there in 12
minutes! Best pizza ever-hands down!
Miss
my Bill's Pizza. Especially your Taco Pizza. If you ever
decided to ship pizza, you would have a client in
Arkansas! Have you ever considered a side mail order
business...
I grew up in the Glenwood area and
graduated from Ben L. Smith in 1975. The Bill's Pizza
Pub on High Point Road was unbeatable with quality and
quantity. It was a great establishment for us teenagers
to converse with each other for those who did not want
to drive down the road to Monty's, the other local
hangout.
Would you
guys ever consider a mail order business? I was a
college student in Greensboro in the late 80's and if I
remember correctly, you guys had take home pizza kits. I
live in Atlanta now, and I would love to have one
shipped if it is possible. I will never forget Bills
pepperoni pizza special. I have not had pizza as good as
that anywhere since not even in New York.
The Bill's in
Oak Ridge was a great move! I live in Brown Summit, and
for the past several years my visits have become few and
far between. That was until I saw the Oak Ridge location
while driving with my wife. We immediately did a u-turn
in the middle of the highway and drove back to see if
our eyes had fooled us, and wow there was this new
Bill's only 14 miles from our house! We went in and ate
and just to make sure we bought a large Pub Special to
take home so we could enjoy leftovers for the rest of
the weekend. I am so glad you are finally out here in
the country.
Bill's Pizza
evokes such strong feeling and memories in people. As a
child, I have fond memories of going to the Battleground
location with my father and sister in his gold AMC
Pacer- yes, that was the early 80's. What a treat it
always was, and we always got excited about that special
time with Dad. Now, I am an adult, and the flood of
memories that came back when I was re-introduced to
Bill's was amazing. Whenever I mention Bill's to people
who grew up in Greensboro, the response is overwhelming
as they all start reminiscing. The Spencers are lovely
people and they make some of the finest pizza and
memories around!
Stories
of years past are shared every day as people come to
reminisce about their most cherished times at Bill's.
What about you? Do you have a special time or
experience at Bill’s you’d like to share? If so, we’d
love to hear from you
tell us your story! |
